Stop criminalisation of International Solidarity!

Stop State Terror in Colombia!

Saturday, March 6th, 7:30pm

Garema Place, ACT Canberra

A documentary on the current struggles of the Colombian people will be screened, introduced by Colombia solidarity activists. Followed by the controversial documentary that Uribe does not want you to see.

At the time Colombian President Alvaro Uribe agrees to accept seven new US military bases and the US government reactivate its Fourth fleet, Colombian peasants, workers, indigenous, women and children continue to be displaced or even executed.

Internationally, all of those who denounce the criminal regime of Uribe, demand social justice or show any kind of solidarity with the Colombian people and workers, are immediately accused of supporting terrorism. In the US, Australia and other countries, activists, journalists and human rights advocates had been harassed or interrogated by the police. The Colombian government, supported by their Ambassadors and supporters around the world, is leading a campaign to suppress websites, ban films from being publicly screened and persecute political activists.

The Colombian people deserve the support of people around the world. International solidarity is not a criminal activity and all efforts to silence voices of dissent attempt against the basic civil liberties.

This night we will come together to:

  • Demand justice for the victims of state terror in Colombia
  • Denounce all initiatives to criminalise international solidarity
  • Defend our civil rights and liberties to express our solidarity

Supported by: Revolutionary Socialist Party (Canberra), Communist Party of Australia (Victoria) and Socialist Alliance

To Friends and Supporters of Peace and Justice for Colombia

We regret that it has become necessary to postpone the proposed tour and public meetings of Senator Piedad Cordoba Ruiz scheduled for November 2009.

The Senator has advised us that she must postpone the tour due to the imminent release of prisoners in the conflict in Colombia.

Because of the key role she plays in difficult negotiations with the Uribe Government, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) she is required to be in the country in the coming period.

Senator Cordoba has profusely apologised for any inconvenience and has indicated that we may be able to reschedule for January or February 2010. Peace and Justice for Colombia will advise all supporters as soon as new arrangements are made.

In solidarity,
Peace and Justice For Colombia

“In rejection of the persecution against the political opposition
in Colombia through the liberation of the political prisoners and
for the humanitarian exchange”

Justification

The Colombian State has historically and systematically violated Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, through the implementation of strategies and/or policies of war that look for whatever means to put an end to free thinking in our country.  From the physical extermination and disappearances forced on the political opposition in the years of the 70s, 80s and 90s to the accusations, persecutions, fabrications of testimony and the incarceration of all persons who raise their voices in protest.

People´s Power is Changing the World

Victorian Trades Hall

Major cracks are appearing in the global capitalist system – cracks that are being forced open by the tide of rebellions and revolutions across Latin America.

From Cuba to Venezuela and Bolivia to El Salvador, people’s power is toppling neo-liberal governments, challenging multinational corporations, and constructing social and economic alternatives to the plunder, war and injustices of the old system. For 50 years, the Cuban revolution has inspired millions of people around the world struggling for independence, human rights and genuine democracy. Now, the Venezuelan revolution, with its vision of “socialism of the 21st century”, is continuing to provide examples of what a socialist government can achieve. Continue reading »

Documentary and discussion night with the participation of  Colombian Human rights activists and Peace & Justice for Colombia

Colombia is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a unionised worker, a young person, Afro-descendant or human rights activist. The Colombian army and paramilitaries had imposed state terror as a form of governance. However, organised labour, communities, students, organise in order to gain their country back.

Peace and Justice for Colombia is running a series of information sessions to raise awareness about the tough situation of human rights in Colombia, and the possible paths to a political solution.
